Article title Coping With the Fear of Dentistry
If the thought of visiting a dental office makes you break out in a cold sweat, you are not alone. Many people avoid visiting the dentist because of a natural fear of dental treatment or due to a traumatic dental experience in their past. Being mindful of this fact, some dentists advertise that they “cater to cowards” by offering “a little blue pill” or “sedation dentistry.” What exactly is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry, as the name implies, is a term that refers to the use of anesthesia during treatment to put patients into a relaxed state. While sedation dentistry implies rthat patients are unconscious, it is generally not the case. Occasionally referred to as “sleep dentistry”, the term is misleading, because the patient is not asleep during the procedure, but may feel sleepy from the sedative effect produced by the medication.
There are different types and degrees of sedation, which will be recommended by the dentist depending upon his training and experience, the degree of anxiety experienced by the patient and the treatment to be performed.
The three most common types of sedation used in dentistry are:
For people who need mild to moderate sedation, a sedative pill or liquid taken before a dental visit can take the edge off jittery nerves for the anxious patient, but it will require someone to drive the patient to and from the dental appointment.
Inhalation sedation (“laughing gas”, nitrous oxide) is a mild sedative, makes you feel slightly intoxicated, and relieves apprehension. Laughing gas makes the dental treatment time seem to pass more quickly. The major advantage of this form of sedation is that its effects disappear when it is discontinued. Since you are almost immediately back to a normal state, you can drive yourself afterwards.
If you want to be less aware of the dental treatment being preformed, if you want to be “out of it”, IV-sedation drugs administered into the blood stream thought a vein, is the method of choice. This technique requires dentists to have the kind of expertise that only advanced training can provide. Dr. Richard Grubb has this training and many years of experience administering sedation dentistry. Since its safe, effective, and less risky than general anesthesia, IV-Sedation is Dr. Grubb’s favorite method of sedation for surgical procedures as well as treating the extremely apprehensive patient.
Many people, who avoid visiting the dentist because of the common dental phobia, frequently, suffer the consequences with compromised oral health and appearance, which also negatively impacts a person’s general health. Sedation dentistry addresses this phobia, allowing complez dental procedures necessary due to years of neglect, which would normally require numerous appointments to be performed in just one or two visits from the dentist. If you have been delaying dental treatment due to the feeling of anxiety, please do not delay and call Dr. Grubb’s office today at 410-939-5800 to inquire how you can benefit from sedation dentistry. You’ll be glad you did!
