Root Canals

Tooth pain is often the result of a tooth abscess. Tooth abscesses can be caused by injury or advanced decay infecting the pulp or nerve chamber. When this occurs, the tooth can often be treated and saved with root canal therapy.

If your tooth needs root canal therapy, your tooth will first be numbed so you will be comfortable during the procedure. A small hole is then made into the pulp chamber, the space within the tooth which contains the nerve and blood vessels. The diseased tissue is then removed, the chamber cleaned out, and then filled all the way to the end of the root. Some people mistakenly think that the root of the tooth is removed, but that is not the case.

After the root canal treatment is completed, the abscess heals and the tooth can be restored to its original form and function. Most of the time, a root canal is a procedure with little or no discomfort involving one to three visits. The tooth pain is caused by the infection. Root canal treatment eliminates that infection and takes away that pain.

Regular dental visits can help reduce the need for a root canal, by identifying problems before unbearable tooth pain.
